Put some Fibre in your life!!
We just finished hanging the new art show at the Village Gallery (1975 Vernon Street) and once again I am blown away. This time, the show “Field to Fibre” celebrates the common and ordinary home arts of weaving, knitting, embroidery and quilting, which down through the ages have made our homes and lives so much more interesting.
Often dismissed in the past with the judgment “not fine art”, these works demonstrate every quality one wants in art: originality, complexity, skill, attention to detail, pursuit of excellence and interpretation of a particular tradition.
Running for the month of August this show features traditional work: quilting, petit-point, knitting Norwegian cut-work and more.
There is functional and wearable art: sweaters, mittens hats, tea towels and pillows.
And whimsical pieces: explorations of the uses of fibre: toys, sculptural pieces, dryer balls! (Ask us about the felted solar system mobile!)
As part of the show there will be two “Art in the Market” days, August 12th and 26th where you can find the Monashee Weavers and assorted other artists demonstrating their skills at the Lumby Public Market. Here’s your chance to watch, chat, perhaps shop a bit or sign up for a winter class. -Robin LeDrew
Calling all artists! – My Story: How Heritage and History have shaped You
The Monashee Arts Council is planning an art show inspired by Heritage. The show will begin on September 5th and conclude on September 29th.
We invite all artists to submit artwork that tells a story! If you are comfortable sharing your story, your brief description of your piece will be included in the show. This way all may enjoy and learn about the Heritage in our community.
Heritage has a wide array of topics, you may choose to tell an old family story, a personal story, or a story of discovery, pain or growth that you would like to portray through a piece of art. It could be related to a predecessor, property, tradition, pride, suffering, society, culture, history, architecture, or any other topic related to Heritage. Or you may like to ponder and answer a question with a piece of artwork, for example,
Do you believe you live by your heritage? Or have you purposely distanced yourself from your heritage? If so, why?
- Does your heritage inspire you to create?
- How has heritage shaped the world? And you?
- Whatever you choose, make it about you!
The deadline for entering pieces in the show will be August 31st. You can pick up your entry forms at the MAC office at 1975 Vernon Street, Lumby BC.
