This past Sunday September 17 was the 43rd annual Terry Fox run.
In 1980 a brave young 18 year old with the name of Terry Fox from Port Coquitlam BC Canada had his leg amputated above his kneecap due to having Osteogenic Sarcoma Cancer (Bone Cancer, which usually only happens in children, and adolescents) On April 12 1980 Terry decided to do a run across Canada. This run was to help raise money for cancer research. His run was 5,373 km. Running about 42 km per day, it didn’t matter if there was rain, wind, snow, extreme heat, Terry still did the run every day. On September 1, 1980 Terry’s Run ended as the cancer had now spread to his lungs. His goal was to raise $1.00 from all Canadians to help with the Cancer Research. Since then the Terry Fox run has raised over $850 Million.
Terry passed away at the age of 22, June 28, 1981, but still his legacy continues, people from all over the globe people run on this day to help raise awareness and money for cancer research.
Over the years people from all walks of life would write letters to Terry Fox, most of the envelopes would just read Terry Fox, or dear Terry and the letters would always be directed to the Terry Fox foundation.
This year in collaboration with the Fox family Canadian Actor Ryan Reynolds help to design a Terry Fox T- shirt (you can look online on where to buy these). Terry always said “never give up hope: and he never did.
Thank You Terry for giving the world hope.
