I remember when I was a kid, about once a month there would be a block party happening somewhere at one of the neighbours house. There was always music playing, a lot of the times it would be one of the local bands playing, and sometimes it would just be someone’s stereo. It didn’t matter where the music came from, it was always a good time. There were always burgers, and hot dogs for the kids and steaks for the adults. Every household that came would of course bring their go to potluck dish which was always yummy.
Somehow, the host always picked a nice sunny day, it never rained or got too windy.
The block parties would usually start in the afternoons around 1:00 pm and last into the evening, the kids would have sleep overs and the adults would continue having fun. There were never any fights, between the kids, or the adults, it was just a good fun time.
As everyone grew older, the block parties seemed to have slowly disappeared, I had thought they were now a thing of the past, once in awhile you might hear of one going on somewhere in the far distance.
But, not this past Sunday august 17, 2025 a really cool block party went on outside the Lumby Legion. There was live music with 2 bands: Red Dog, and Those Guys (yep, that is the real name of the band) They each played a set, there was hamburgers, and hotdogs, just like any real block party should have. There were things for the kids to do including having face painting, and there was also an ice cream truck. It was great, and a lot of fun. When it got to hot the adults went down into the Legion lounge to cool off.
It was a fun time, that brought back happy memories of the block parties from my childhood, and they planned it right with the weather, there was no rain, a little breeze and a whole lot of sunshine, so of I course I wore my Sunglasses!
You know my saying” it’s always a good day when you can wear sunglasses” and it really was.
Thank You Stu and Dawn, for coming up with this idea, thank you to the village, and whomever for allowing the street to be blocked off, thank you to the Lumby Legion for continuing the block party to be at your place of business, thank you to the bands, and all the volunteers, thank you all for making a blah Sunday fun.
Maybe this is something that could happen more than once.
