Spring Renewal

Seniors, we may still be in the midst of the pandemic but spring is here and the sun is bringing nature alive.  It is important that we rejuvenate our overall wellness by getting outside and enjoying this new season.

Get out in the garden!

Gardening promotes overall health and quality of life.  It supports physical strength, fitness, flexibility and even cognitive skill.  If you do not have your own plot of dirt; call Whitevalley Community Resource Centre for more information on Lumby’s Community Garden boxes.

Soak up the beautiful weather! Spending time in the sunshine can improve your mood and cognition.  It can help boost vitamin D levels, strengthen bones, protect against depression and insomnia; the list goes on and on.  Our Village as many businesses featuring outdoor patio seating, (following safe, social distancing), while still allowing patrons to relax on a spring day.  Several also offer senior discounts.

Get outside and walk!

Movement in the great outdoors helps one feel revitalized and rejuvenated.  Research has shown that seniors who get out walking experience less tension, confusion and negative emotions.  In Lumby and area, we have many beautiful parks and walking trails for all abilities.  Visit our local Chamber of Commerce for suggestions and maps.

Take a look at your diet!

Perhaps, you are eating foods that are making you sluggish?  Try to thin out the processed foods and be aware of what is in season.  There are options of hot, nutritious, affordable meals for seniors in our community, provided by different non-profit organizations. The Good Food Box is also available once a month, packed full of fresh fruits and vegetables with senior sizing and pricing.

De-Clutter and do some downsizing!

Why not go through and thin out some of the clothes you haven’t worn in the last six months or household items that are just gathering dust? Clutter in your home space can increase stress and anxiety feelings.  Lumby boasts a busy, local thrift store that happily accepts good condition donations, several times a week.

We have a lot of great amenities in our community for a retired person to take advantage of while celebrating a spring renewal.  For more information on local services call Whitevalley Community Resource Centre 250-547-8866.
