The other day we went for a drive out to Mable Lake. It was a little chilly and there was no sun, it was cloudy and a little dark, but it was still a nice drive. The road heading to Mable Lake was a bit bumpy and muddy with a few potholes that were not too deep. We didn’t expect to see anyone out there at this time of year, so what a good surprise it was to see a few people sitting at the water’s edge fishing. They were all bundled up with their poles in the water. It must have been “Ladies Day” as the women there were the only people catching fish that day, while the men’s fishing poles just dangled in the water. While we were there we chatted with the people and the lady I was talking to from Cherryville caught 2 fish as I was standing beside her. Her smile was enormous and contagious, her husband came over to remove the fish from her line as he jokingly said with a smile “oh sure, you catch all the fish and I have to clean them.”

We stayed for a bit longer enjoying the conversations and the fresh air while being near the water. After awhile we left, on our way out from Mable Lake we thought we might go a little bit further to see if the shoe tree was still there. That was a big mistake, the road was extremely mucky with huge potholes that would not be good for our little car. We drove a little ways up before the road started to look a bit dangerous. There were parts of the road that looked like it had been washed away. There was no place to turn around, Tim had to drive backwards down the road before we could find a safe place where we could turn the car around. After we got off the road we came home. The car definitely needed a bath after that drive, which we did the next day.
I like road trips, but I think the next time we go to Mable Lake or to see the shoe tree again we will wait until the weather and the roads are in a better condition.
