According to Seniors Outreach’s executive director Vi Sorenson, “Finding a place to live is stressful enough for anyone, but picture someone who is losing cognition trying to call ads and have conversations with landlords. It can create a lot of anxiety and confusion.”
“People need to be housed, and the worries of moving and finding a home are overwhelming. Affordability has gone through the roof, and seniors in their seventies, eighties and even nineties are being evicted as landlords sell their houses in this hot housing market. These vulnerable people are struggling as they find themselves on the verge of experiencing homelessness.”
Seniors Outreach and Resource Centre offers several housing services through their Regional Housing Program including, the services of a Housing Social Worker that helps these older adults find housing and acts as an advocate and emotional resource for them. The social worker navigates the system and helps them understand housing options such as affordable or low-income housing, assistive living, supportive housing, and long-term care. She works to help individual seniors with to either attain or maintain housing when they can no longer manage the process on their own.
Seniors Outreach is also launching a new pilot companion housing program this summer, which will offer another option for seniors struggling to find an affordable place to call home. Seniors Outreach believes that companion housing is an important part of the solution for problems related to housing affordability and social isolation, for both homeowners and potential renters.
The organization also offers services such as Better at Home (non-medical home supports), Seniors Centre Without Walls, volunteer tax program, information and resource information and crisis counseling for seniors. If you would like to help you can volunteer, donate, or purchase a raffle ticket. Seniors Outreach is running a 50/50 raffle to raise funds for the housing program. Tickets are available at the office location or visit their website at https://seniorsoutreach.ca/online-raffle/
