Hugh Cox (1940)

Moments in Time – Photos & Memories from the Lumby Museum – Hugh Cox

During the winter months, every Tuesday and Thursday for 28 years, Lumby’s Hugh Cox (1895-1975) would deliver mail  and supplies from Lumby to the Cherryville Post Office using horses and a sleigh.  He also shopped and delivered supplies for families along the way.   The round trip would take 18 hours with a stopover at Sam Andrew’s place for a meal and a change of horses.   Although Hugh was not a trained vet, he acquired the name “Doc Hugh Cox” because he attended to sick animals along his route.  Hugh married Eva Leger and together they raised nine children.
