Donald McIntyre (1831 - 1917)

Moments in Time – Photos & Memories from the Lumby Museum – Donald McIntyre

Did you know McIntyre Lake near the Monashee summit was named after Donald McIntyre? Donald came to this area around 1880 and was the first prospector to stake a claim in the Cherryville area – it was a silver deposit just east of McIntyre lake. Donald worked the mine for many years but never became rich. Donald is credited with the naming of Monashee Mountain (previously called Gold Range). It was a windy, snowy day in 1881 when Donald was out prospecting for gold. He was cold, wet and discouraged when the sun suddenly broke through, casting a warm glow on the mountain before him.  The sight so impressed him that he exclaimed “Monadh-sith translated into the English word “Monashee” meaning “Mountain of Peace”.
