The Ice Breaker Speech is the first prepared speech a new Toastmaster gives. The purpose is to give a 4-6 minute speech about oneself to the club. This may include background, interests, career and why the member joined Toastmasters. It is a start in a new member’s quest to become comfortable and more confident with public speaking. There are several Pathways in Toastmasters. David has chosen Dynamic Leadership which focuses on understanding and learning the skills required to become an effective leader. We were, as always, a very supportive and safe audience which included 4 of us in the room, 3 on Zoom including a guest from Vancouver, and one member on speaker on her telephone. Afterwards, his speech was evaluated by VP of Education, Curt Reimer, who highlighted the strengths of his speech and gave some gentle tips for improvement.
There are others out there who may want to “take the plunge” but are reluctant because of their fear of public speaking. We all joined Toastmasters to learn and get over the fear of public speaking. And we have fun doing so!
If you’d like to give Toastmasters a try, come as a guest. We meet at the Lumby Museum at 7 PM, the 2nd & 4th Tuesdays of the month. Meet and Greet is from 6:30-7:00 pm. For those that can’t make it, join us on Zoom. Contacts are Marena: 250-938-7288 (reneguy@shaw.ca) or Louise Wilcox- 250-307-5593.
