Not that reminders are needed to show affection to our animal companions but February 20th is a perfect time as it is officially National Love Your Pet Day. It is easy to let a pet become a large part of your life but there also are so many benefits for seniors to promote this kind of companionship.
While any pet owner can certainly attest to the advantages of living with a furry friend, research confirming the health benefits of seniors owning a pet has appeared in many well-respected publications and medical journals.
Studies have shown that the bond between seniors and their pets can increase mobility, lower stress, and bring joy to their owners. Some of the health rewards of having a pet include; decreased blood pressure, lowered cholesterol and triglyceride levels, decreased feelings of loneliness and increased opportunities for socialization.
For instance, a canine companion can provide unconditional love and encourage exercise. This could explain why a study done in 2017 by Scientific Reports found that dog owners are less likely to die of heart disease than people without dogs. A different study conducted in Sweden detailed that animal ownership lowered heart disease in aging pet owners.
These benefits can be especially apparent for seniors who live alone. Animal companions may ease stress, loneliness, depression, and inspire people to be more active and socially connected – all things that contribute to overall health and well-being. February 20th is the perfect day to show your pet some extra loving. If you don’t have your own pet, it is still a great time to shower some affection on an animal in your life.
