Happy Volunteer Appreciation Week!

It is National Volunteer Week April 14th – 20th.  Many Community programs and service clubs around the country depend on volunteers to make them successful and better their communities. Lumby is no different, our community is full of hardworking volunteers from coaches in sports, the Lumby Food Bank, The Good Food Box, The Lions, and Whitevalley Community Resource Centre to name a few.

The benefits of volunteering are huge not only to the community or organization the volunteers are working with, but there are huge personal benefits as well.

  • Feelings of connection and personal value.
  • Meeting like-minded people.
  • Develop new friendships.
  • Learn and develop new skills.
  • Can reduce stress, depression, anger and anxiety.
  • Provides a sense of purpose.
  • Connects you to the community.
  • Personal fulfillment and sense of purpose.
  • Develop social skills.
  • Can bring you out of your comfort zone.
  • Volunteering commitments equaled more than 2.5 million full-time jobs in 2018 – Statistics Canada.
  • There are less people volunteering after the pandemic, however the need had not gone down.
  • The economic value of volunteering in 2018 was $55 billion dollars.
  • The highest sector of volunteers is in hospital sector and in the religious sector.
  • Close to half of Canadians volunteer.
  • Volunteering can also be a ton of fun.

Volunteering doesn’t have to be a huge time commitment you can give as much or as little as you have; our small and mighty Village has many different volunteering opportunities.

“The quality of your life will be determined by the quality of your contribution. When you work to improve the lives of others, your life improves automatically.”
