I Was Going To Organize My Dried Flowers… Then I Realized I Had More Pressing Problems To Deal With!!
As was predicted we got snow this last Saturday and although the temperatures were mild there was a bit of a collection of snow in some areas of the yard. Our average temperatures will still be fairly warm for this time of year but by the end of the month both day and night time temperatures will be in the minus area. My plum tree is shedding its leaves now, finally and I hope to get them off my lawn in the next couple of days. The Maple tree true to form has shed its leaves and I have them put away, All else in the yard is ready as I’ll ever be and I am satisfied. Yards in town and on my drive into town look pristine so everyone is on the same track.
The Grey Cup was held this weekend in Vancouver and although my beloved Rough Riders did not make the roster I enjoyed watching the Toronto Argonauts beat the Winnipeg Blue Bombers. I do have a confession I thought the game was on Saturday and so I settled in to watch. I was a little baffled by the fact that it was the Montreal Alouettes that were playing the Winnipeg team but thought well I made a mistake and was wrong. My brother in law from Singapore was unable to get the game but he too thought that he was wrong so we placed a small bet that Montreal would win. After the game I texted my Cousin Cathy in Regina who is a master at who is playing, all their names, and all the stats on these players she asked me what I was talking about as the Grey Cup Game was being played on Sunday. Needless to say she had a good laugh at me when she realized that I had watched last years Grey Cup Game. It was a great game and the outcome was excellent and I decided not to hold my brother in law to the fact that last year I was correct in my selection. Well there went my 5 buck win and a lot of laughs were had on my behalf. It also explains where the half time show went as they jumped that segment of the show. This years game was not nearly exciting until the last 10 minutes of the game and where they trounced Winnipeg royally.
In my efforts to get all the winter chores done which included harvesting 2 Emus and 3 head of beef I gathered up the last of the flowers that do so well by being dried and arranged for a winter display in the house. I had Eucalyptus, Hydrangea, Globe Thistle, some Rose Hips and other wild berry plants that do so nicely dries, I had previously picked the last of my Status, and Sedum, although I like to leave the Sedum and a few other plants for the birds to pick at over the winter. I have also collected some interesting twigs, Pine and Fir cones that will be wonderful when I make my Christmas Wreaths. I am going to make some Potpourri this year so I have also collected some herbs and flower petals that along with the Eucalyptus should be wonderful. I love the smell of them in a bowl or put in my cupboards that will gently perfume my clothes. I love to make gifts of these treats along with treats harvested and canned from my garden. Hard to imagine that Christmas is only about a month away, I will be dragging out and setting up my Christmas decor, this is one of my favourite celebrations to enjoy, a time of joy, love and sharing. Of course with the strike that Canada Post has initiated I am at a loss as to whether I will even be able to send out Christmas Cards. Amazing that they have been in financial trouble for some time and employees have been in a tight position for that same time or longer and again they choose the Christmas season to hold up the public and their busiest season.
I like to make and grow my Christmas gifts and for those of my family that I do exchange gifts with I have for years now bought Charitable Gift Vouchers that I send in the mail. Fortunately we are all mature enough to be able to weather this small storm and celebrate the festivity in January or even Spring should it take that long to work out the postal issues. I’m a little old fashioned so am not so familiar with the one line methods of transport but I’m sure that other methods are available. So sad that Greyhound is gone because my family and I had use them for years.
Happy Gardening!
