A Weed Is A Plant That Has Mastered Every Survival Skill…
Except For Learning To Grow In Rows!
It has been a sad and disturbing week, one which requires some decisive action by our government, our courts and each and everyone of us. My heart is broken for the unprovoked massacre of innocent people celebrating in Vancouver. The fact that someone in Canada would do something so heinous is beyond imagination and the excuse of it being a result of a mental health issue is unacceptable.
I don’t know about you but I am sick to death of vagrants, homeless or displaced people however you wish to label them holding up many businesses, putting their staff and others at risk, random attacks on elderly people or anyone they come across as well as trashing areas, setting fires and leaving dangerous syringes anywhere they choose including areas where children frequent, There is no excuse for the catch and release set up with the law and use the rest of us as hostages. Many of them with prior offences that are amazingly long and progressively more violent. This last offence on our Canadian Philippine community has pushed the envelope.
I can’t believe the restraint they showed detaining this young man while waiting for the police. A testament to their heritage and upbringing as hardworking, honest, law abiding citizens. The second loss was the death of Pope Francis. I am not Catholic by faith but my admiration of this man was huge and I hope that his incumbent is as forward thinking, humble and God serving as he was. We need someone to lead with the grace that Pope Francis led the Catholic Faith. May he rest in peace in Gods arms.
The weather is now very pleasant except for the nights that are still a little cool. Certainly not as cool as Alberta and Saskatchewan with their recent snow falls ( I would be in tears) Temperatures over the next week remain the same with a little rain to green things up.
I saw my first wasp in the greenhouse so I am actively looking for a nest and then the war is on. I will win! Also I have been pulling the inevitable Crab Grass which of course I have renamed as you well know. Crab Grass first will appear in you grassy areas and if not mowed or kept in check will develop seed heads containing 150,000 seeds each. It also spreads by its root shoots that seem to be down several feet and every piece is a possible plant making it a formidable, invasive plant.
To tackle this plant one needs more than to religiously pull it out and it needs help and there is help in an organic treatment that I am trying this year. My lawn is not my priority but when the Crab Grass invades my garden and flower beds some decisive action is needed. Even when it starts growing in flower pots it will circulate around the pot till it needs to be dumped and restarted. Maintaining the lawn is a must and I intend to dedicate more time to that but one thing that you can do is apply Corn Gluten Meal with a Nitrogen fertilizer that you can easily apply. This should be done early spring around the time the Forsythia which is happening now and an average daytime temperature of at least 60 degrees.
We have applied this to our lawn and I will inform you of my success. Meanwhile things are growing well in the greenhouse and a massive transplanting is underway. Peas are up and Radishes are planted and I’ve found that a watched plant does not boil or grow any faster!
Happy Gardening!
