COVID-19 Update: City of Vernon Outdoor Playgrounds to Open June 1

As phased reopening plans continue to progress across the Okanagan, the next phase will see outdoor playgrounds opening in Vernon and numerous other Okanagan communities on June 1.

Once caution tape and temporary fencing have been removed, it will signify that playgrounds have been inspected and are now open for public use. Residents are asked to refrain from using these spaces until parks staff remove closed signs and caution tape.

The Polson Park spray park, outdoor pools and indoor recreation facilities will remain closed until further notice.

Residents are encouraged to exercise caution when visiting local playgrounds, as equipment is not sanitized. However, playgrounds will be power washed when caution tape is removed and signage will be installed to remind residents of Provincial health guidelines to prevent the spread of COVID-19. Please remember to:

  • Wash and/or sanitize hands before and after visiting playgrounds
  • Keep physical distancing (2m between individuals) and avoid gatherings
  • Stay home if you feel sick

The City of Vernon has been working collaboratively with School District 22, municipal, and regional partners to determine when and how to reopen playgrounds in a coordinated approach and a safe manner.

The City appreciates everyone’s patience and understanding while playgrounds were closed to contain the spread of COVID-19, protect our community members, and reduce the impact on our health care system. We continue to work with the BC Recreation and Parks Association (BCRPA) to develop a framework for reintroducing other activities, programs and recreation opportunities to our citizens in a way that will allow for participation while meeting the criteria outlined by BC’s Provincial Health Officer.
