Welcome to Colleen’s Corner. This is a column meant for fun and some information About myself: I am a Freelance Photographer you often see me on the side of the road or in various places taking photos of different things animals, birds, places, people etc. l have lived in Lumby just over 8 years you have seen my photos in the newspaper (Lumby Valley Times) and once in awhile in the Vernon Morning Star, and the Lumby Art Gallery. Photography is my passion. Disclaimer: The information on some of my photos that I write about a lot of times come from the Internet or books I research them, hopefully the facts are as close to the truth as I can come.
On my travels lately I have come across some interesting facts, not everyone accepts debit or credit cards which is okay as it saves me the interest I have to pay on my Visa.
Although there are a couple of countries that will not take cash, (China being one of them) I am glad they do here. About a month or so ago there was a major power outage here. A lot of the stores including some gas stations had to close their doors as all of their machines were down from lack of power, even though they also take cash. There are a couple of places here that take cash only, so their doors were able to stay open. On one of the windows of the stores that take cash they had a sign that said,”Come on in, your money is good here because it is still KING.” Of course I laughed at this sign, but my camera was in the car along with my cell phone so I didn’t get a picture but I was sure glad they were open.
The people working in the store had made up the sign and placed it in the window shortly after the power went out, as people were coming into the store to say how happy they were that they could still buy the things they needed. Like a lot of people most of us don’t carry cash anymore because we have our cards of convenience, I usually try to carry at least $20.00 cash just in case. It is highly recommended from travel agencies, people that lend money, and other sources that everyone should always have at least $500.00 cash in a safe place in case of emergencies.
Across the world you will see that more power outages are happening due to so many different things, floods, fires, bad weather and so many other things.
In a world of so much technology with our computers, cellphones, charging all of our electronics, credit and debit cards everything is WIFI and Bluetooth, but if we lose power for whatever reason and it could be for days and some places have lost power for weeks or longer leaving people without the use of their cellphones and other electronics and with no communication to the outside world so that friends and families don’t know if they are okay or not. They couldn’t buy supplies as all around them things were closed, some places in nearby towns would only take cash as they were also having problems using the debit, credit machines.
I have always believed that cash is still “KING” and now I know first hand for sure, it has always been King and probably always will.
So, the next time you go to your bank or bank machine make sure you take some cash out for down the road. It could help to save your or someone else’s life.
