Back To School

Back to School days are coming up quickly now with only a few days left of summer fun with our children. It was always a sad time of the year for me; however, I may have been the minority where that is concerned!

One of the stresses of back-to-school time was the extra costs of getting kids decked out with some decent clothes, shoes, supplies, and lunch items for their backpacks. Well of course most of the solution when it comes to clothing and supplies is right in our village and completely on your route to anywhere!

The thrift shop here in Lumby has always been amazing, and it’s only gotten better with age let me tell you! I’ve been shopping for my kid’s clothes there for at least 25 years, probably being one of the first regular crew that came in to shop! With kids enjoying different variations and trends now you shouldn’t have any problems finding what they need. I’ve also found that Fields is a great place to go for inexpensive clothing and they also carry a nice variety of school supplies and snacks-check them out!

The HUNGER-FREE SUMMER KIDS program will be winding down this week as well with Friday being the final day. We hope that those families have been able to benefit and it has been helpful as a parent to know that you won’t run short of food for your kiddos. I can’t imagine having that type of heavy burden weighing you down, and this is why we went ahead with the Summer Program for the kids. No child should go hungry!

Open for extras without appointment on the 1st, 3rd, 4th Tuesdays from 12-2pm

Thank you to the generous people that donated money and food, thanks to you it made this entire program what it was-without your support, this may have been tossed to the back burner. Zelaney Farms was absolutely wonderful at ensuring we had some fresh produce to add to the packages every week-thank you!

Cora-thank you for locating a source of fresh blueberries and peaches donated from Swan Lake Gardens. These many cases were brought to the OAP hall for evacuees and also generously offered to the food bank for the kids program. Many cases also headed in different directions for firefighters to have a fresh healthy treat!

A huge shout out and thanks to Diane and Robert for taking this on with (and sometimes without) me, they have truly been the wind beneath my wings, without them I’m not sure if I could have managed. And my kiddos-thanks Victoria and Owen for all the hard work you put into this program and regularly at the Food Bank! And let’s not forget our Flori-who’s ready, willing, and able to help when called upon-backup is always comforting and she has our back-as does everyone at the Food Bank-what a great bunch.

A great big thank you to Andrew with the Lumby Valley Times for his endless support and generosity with the Kids Program and the Food Bank; your patience has not gone unnoticed-thank you!

With all the new things that have happened the past few months at the Food Bank, it’s been nice to be able to keep you all in the loop. As this excitement slows down, my entries here in the LVT will as well. I’ll still drop in occasionally to keep you up to date, and I’d like to introduce you to our friendly family here at the Food Bank!

Keep an eye out on the table under the canopy for any extras after 3 on Tuesdays- and please help yourself!

Until we meet again, Adios!
